The Mint: Bratislava Mint (Pressburg Mint)
The Bratislava Mint, also known as the Pressburg Mint, is one of the oldest and most important mints in Europe. It is located in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, and has a rich history dating back to the 13th century.
Foundation and early history: The mint was founded in 1291 by the Hungarian King Andrew III. It initially minted silver coins known as Prague groschen, which quickly gained popularity in Central Europe due to their high silver purity.
The mint experienced a period of prosperity in the 15th and 16th centuries, becoming one of the most important centers of coin production in the Kingdom of Hungary. Many iconic coins were minted during this period, including gold ducats and thalers.
From the 16th century, Bratislava and the mint came under the control of the Habsburgs. During this period, it continued to play an important role in the monetary system of the empire, issuing coins for its various parts. It was during this period that the mint was named Pressburg Mint, after the German name of the city – Preschburg.
In the 19th century, the mint was modernized and continued to issue coins for the Austro-Hungarian Empire. After the collapse of the empire in 1918, it began minting coins for Czechoslovakia.
After the collapse of Czechoslovakia in 1993, the Bratislava Mint became the national mint of Slovakia. It continues to issue euro coins for Slovakia, as well as commemorative and collector coins.
Pressburg Mint produces a wide range of commemorative and investment coins made of precious metals (gold, silver) on orders from governments and national banks of various countries. These coins are often dedicated to historical events, famous personalities, flora and fauna.
